After my last post bemoaning the negativity on planet, psn suggested that perhaps I should post something positive. So here's what I'm working on at the moment.
First and foremost I suppose is debconf7. Initially I've basically been playing secretary to meetings. More recently, due to the list of complaints collectively known as "NoJune", I've been doing my best to investigate the possibility of moving the provisional dc7 booking date forward in time a week or two, towards July.
After several discussions staring at the time table and what info we had about other bookings, followed by several phone calls with the venue, I unfortunately have basically confirmed that the entirety of July and the last week of June are not open to us at all, so there's no way we can move the date.
My other main activity in Debian at the moment is as a member of the Debian Games Team, where I'm mainly working on doom-related packages in order to implement my world domination plans.
Due to the impending freeze I've been trying to work out what of the plan I can implement and get packages uploaded so that the Etch doom experience is as good as possible.

planet debian right now: GRs; complaints about GRs; some light hearted poking of fun at GRs; taking the fun out of debian; dunc-tank criticism; DPL criticism; criticism of criticism; mis-quotes, etc.
planet ubuntu right now: debug symbols for all packages; disabling the synaptics touchpad whilst typing; various other productive and interesting things.
I don't know if it's always like this, and the ubuntu community certainly isn't flame free (I've been following ubuntu-devel recently), but right now, the public face of debian is not shouting the triumphs loud enough to be heard above the bitching.

This weekend gone I was up in Edinburgh for the debconf7 localteam local meeting. This was a mammoth 2½ hour meeting with a fair degree of parallel discussion going on. The minutes are up now.
I used my iRiver's built-in dictaphone to record the meeting and this has proven very helpful writing up the minutes. I am actually quite suprised at both the quality of the result and the fact it's battery survived recording, encoding and writing to disk the whole affair, with plenty of capacity to spare. The file came to 70MB.
Apart from the meeting, we got to visit the proposed venue and Neil, Phil and myself sampled some possible accomodation. There was generally a very positive feeling about things: Neil (who has attended a Debconf before: I haven't) seemed very happy/relieved when he saw the Hostel I was staying in and everyone was agreed that the Teviot was a fantastic venue (although networking and power should be fun).
Oh and there was lots of beer :)
Kate came up on the sunday and met us for some coffee before we went off and had a lovely meal at David Bann vegetarian restaurant.
There are some photos of the weekend up on flickr, or at least there will be, when I've finished uploading :)

Only 8 months after 0.4, Freedoom 0.5 is out.
0.5 (or, "half way there") has a major focus on updating graphics. We have new Baron, Revenant and Demon monster sprites, plus more sensible placeholders for the monsters we haven't finished yet.
