I was trying to think of some of the bands who owe their success to John Peel, and the BBC has kindly put together such a list.

I think its fair to say that if you want to find a source of good new music, you could just work your way through Peel playlists. Its an approach that would certainly last a long time!

This is a fairly redundant post, but I am updating regarding the death of John Peel. I am greatly saddened to learn of the passing of who can only be described as one of the most fantasticly eclectic and warm DJs ever to have broadcast.

I have listened on and off to Peel for years - off mostly, for the last couple of months. I haven't really listened to any music as I've been moving around so much - uni, home, holiday, home, work - but its been on my mind to settle into the old routine.

I last read something about Peel when I learnt that Robert Smith was guest presenting Peel's show for a night of his holiday. I didn't get a chance to tune into Peel as he died the next day.

Quite frankly, John Peel is irreplaceable. His loss will be felt greatly by fans of his show, and by struggling musicians looking for recognition - like Orbital, Pulp, the Undertones, Blur, the Cure, New Order, etc. etc.

Hacked a bit on the code for the Window Manager. I've got a really recent copy which I'm working from. Rather than copy the recent copy into the directory on the web server (via my CVS repository), I'm gently incorporating the differences into the CVS copy, bit by bit. This means it'll take a while for the copy on the site to be up-to-date: however, the CVS repository will have some kind of logical progression of development in it (rather than one huge diff in a single commit), which is important for an experiment I am conducting.

This also means that I'll understand it bit-by-bit: it has been a few months since I wrote any kind of C, let alone xlib, let alone window-management hackery.

I forgot to mention in my last update, I have also bought 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' on DVD. This would make the third time I have seen it (cinema, a Xvid screener, now the DVD) but I am still enjoying it. Watched the DVD with Kate and my aunt yesterday, both loved it (Kate's second time).

Job

This job has me playing with some interesting software and hardware, including apache, linux and php (so not much different from what I do at home then), but also kerberos, (open)ldap, active directory and blackboard (urgh), and finally, possibly censored.

Also under the header of 'geek' is what I have been working on recently. I started to write a Window Manager just after my last exam at Durham. However I've somehow managed to lose the copy in CVS, so stay tuned, the code is forthcoming (just not exciting).
