<h5>sound card not working</h5>

Sorted sound via Installing Debian on LG's LW60-DBJA Express Notebook. In brief, not entirely sure how alsa works, how debian packages it, etc. but I had to recompile my kernel and some external alsa modules. For reference it was Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 03) (via lspci) and the driver was snd-azx.

More details and the precise invocations to fix it all, later.
