Can anyone recommend an XML dialect to me for describing book metadata? Or, a free database via webservice or similar where I can pull in metadata? I'm interested in cross-referencing authors in short story compilations.

This is one of those unfortunate examples of where you cannot really search for the answer, due to the "any popular topic {metadata,xml} and keyword book" effect.
